What are the symptoms of a weak liver?

Welcome to another edition of MedChunk’s Health Bulletin where we strive to make health topics easy to understand. In today’s edition, we’ll take a look at the symptoms of a weak liver.

There are many types of liver disease, which can be caused by infections, obesity, and misuse of alcohol. Liver disease is a broad term that can describe any issue that affects its function.

Possible causes include genetic conditions and autoimmune disorders. A person with liver disease symptoms should talk with a doctor to determine the best treatment. Early treatment can often stop the progression of liver disease and improve a person’s quality of life.

Symptoms of Acute liver disease:

Acute liver disease may have several symptoms, including:

  • Itchy skin.
  • Fever
  • Jaundice
  • Dark urine color.
  • Pale stool
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain under the ribs

Signs of a damaged liver :

  • Jaundice

Jaundice is a condition in which the skin, sclera, and mucous membranes turn yellow. Jaundice caused by liver damage can also be accompanied by itchy skin. Normally, the liver has no problem filtering out bilirubin. When the blood can’t be processed effectively, a build-up of bilirubin can result in a yellowish tint to the skin and white of the eyes.

  • Nausea/Loss of Appetite

Ongoing nausea is a common symptom of early liver damage. When the liver isn’t filtering out toxins effectively, a buildup of toxins in the bloodstream can lead to nausea and even vomiting. As the damage worsens, the symptoms can also include a loss of appetite, diarrhea, and pain in the abdomen.

  • Color of Stools

If you are vomiting blood or noticing blood in your stool, seek medical attention immediately. The normal, dark color of stools is due to the bile salts normally released by the liver. Pale stools may be an indication of damage to the liver. Black, tarry stools can also be an indicator of liver problems, caused by blood passing through the digestive system.

  • Bruising

A damaged liver produces fewer of the proteins necessary for blood clotting, which means you may bleed and bruise more easily. Easy bruising can be caused by a variety of factors, not just liver damage but a damaged liver that can’t produce the right amount of clotting proteins, which leads to more bruising and bleeding than usual.

Liver Care:

It’s important to treat your liver right to keep it functioning properly, which you can do by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Bad habits can lead to irreversible liver damage. So drink alcohol in moderation and maintain a healthy weight.

Liver health diagnosis :

Blood tests are done to evaluate liver function. Doctors can usually diagnose liver failure based on symptoms and the results of a physical examination.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is often first suspected when tests for other medical conditions show a damaged liver. To check for possible causes, doctors ask about all substances that people have taken, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, and nutritional supplements. Depending on the person’s symptoms, tests may be repeated frequently.
